The 5 Types of Posts Every Small Business Owner Needs

June 09, 20264 min read

Here's a question I get all the time: "Nikki, what am I actually supposed to post?"

And I get it. You open Instagram, stare at a blank screen, and either post something random just to have something up — or you close the app and tell yourself you'll do it later. Neither one moves your business forward.

The truth is, there's a simple formula to social media that most people aren't using. Your feed doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to be intentional. And when you have the right mix of content types rotating on your page, showing up consistently becomes a whole lot easier.

Here are the 5 types of posts every small business owner needs, and exactly how to use each one.

TYPE 1: The Education Post

This is the post where you teach your audience something valuable. A tip, a how-to, a myth they believe that isn't true, a step-by-step process. It positions you as the expert and gives people a reason to follow you.

Examples:

  • "3 reasons your Instagram bio isn't converting."

  • "How to batch a month of content in one afternoon."

  • "The one thing you're doing wrong with your captions."

The goal of this post is to be so helpful that people save it, share it, and come back to your page for more. When someone sees your content and thinks, "I learned something from that," they start to trust you, and trust leads to sales.

TYPE 2: The Inspiration Post

People don't just follow accounts that teach them things. They follow accounts that make them feel something. The inspiration post is your opportunity to connect emotionally, share a mindset shift, or speak directly to the struggles your audience is going through.

Examples:

  • A quote that represents your brand philosophy

  • A short story about a challenge you overcame

  • A reminder they needed to hear today

This type of post builds loyalty. When someone reads your caption and thinks "she gets me", that's your brand doing its job.

Post this: 1–2x per week

TYPE 3: The Behind-the-Scenes Post

This is where you let people in. Show them what your process looks like, what your workspace looks like, and what a day in your life looks like. Behind-the-scenes content humanizes your brand and reminds people there's a real person behind the business.

Examples:

  • A photo or video from a client session

  • A "day in my life" Reel

  • A sneak peek at something you're working on

  • Your content creation setup

People buy from people they know, like, and trust. The behind-the-scenes post is how you build the "know" part.

TYPE 4: The Social Proof Post

This is your most powerful selling tool — and most small business owners aren't using it nearly enough. Social proof is testimonials, client wins, results, reviews, and before-and-after transformations. It shows your audience that what you do actually works.

Examples:

  • A screenshot of a client message or review

  • A quote from a client about their results

  • A transformation story (with permission)

  • A milestone you hit because of your clients

You don't have to brag to use social proof. Let your clients' words do the talking.

TYPE 5: The Promotional Post

Yes, you are allowed to sell on social media. In fact, you HAVE to. But the key is that this post should come after you've given value, not instead of it.

Your promotional post is where you tell people about your offer, invite them to work with you, share a link, or create urgency around something specific.

Examples:

  • "Spots are open for my next cohort. Here's how to join."

  • "DM me the word READY to get started."

  • "Link in bio to grab your spot on the waiting list."
